Facebook launches its own collaboration app for companies – Workplace . Facebook Engineers has been working for more than two years for its “Slack for enterprises”. Now out in beta with the title “Workplace”. The core idea behind the workplace app is to unify the mediums for internal communication inside a company.
Till now workplace was used exclusively by selected 1000 companies around the globe for internal communication.
On a first glance facebook’s workplace looked so similar to Social Networks Pages , Groups section. The core difference is that only the team from your company can collaborate in these threads. Biggest thing is it will work for companies of all sizes. It inherits the groups, post updates and tagging people and sharing files in a multiuser chat etc from the parent social network.
Facebook workplace offers Work Chat which acts as messenger platform for company workforce. Though the Video call is limited to one to one, the audio call features conference with multiple people on board for the chat. The Facebook live can be used for internal presentation for team members sitting in different parts of the world.
Workplace also offers intelligent analytics for corporates. Soon expected to launch multi company groups so that companies using facebook for work can collaborate on shared projects.
Now the most interesting part the pricing. The whole service is priced at $3 per user per month for the first 1K users and beyond that will be charged at $2 per user. The service cost even lowers to $1 per use for corporates having more than 10K of employees. Actually i should say the price is a killer factor. The competitors Slack is charging 12.5 $ per user and hipchat charging $2 per user.
Comparing the features and pricing, The facebook workplace is not a big deal for even startups. Being said its yet to announce the Api’s, SDK ‘s for further development of integrations for the same. On the other hand Hipchat and slack have integrations for the most Continuous Integration systems and Repositories. Hipchat and slack also gives the comfort code-level integration for reporting system failovers and unexpected exception to team members as a group. Also integration to CRM, ERP, Project management tools is still a question.
Facebook has changed the way our social communications worked. Will it work the same for workplace? Share your thoughts.
